Kuressaare Castle of Estonia

Kuressaare is a small city of the Saaremaa island of Estonia which is situated on the coast of Riga Gulf. This is a historic city which was emerged on the world map around twelfth century B.C. The most prominent place is obviously Kuressaare Castle which architecture of the medieval style and the main city has also flourished around the Kuressaare Castle.

Kuressaare Castle of Estonia is an important monument in whole of the Baltic region as this building has not undergone many amendments in its structure. In fact, the Kuressaare Castle has restrained itself to its original monumental beauty so its aesthetic significance is doubled.

Kuressaare Castle of Estonia

According to the historians, the reason to build the Kuressaare Castle was the war of the Estonians with the German feudals as a result of which the Saaremaa surrendered to the German crusaders. And this area was converted into a German Feudal state. But the complete domination of the Germans over the Estonians was not possible and there were frequent uprising and rebellions. So the construction of the Kuressaare Castle might would had been started at that time. However the first documented data about the Kuressaare castle originate only from 1380s.

The structure of the Kuressaare Castle was kept of convent type due to its function as it was the administrative centre of the district and to establish a proper shelter place for maximum people in case of a war. The Kuressaare Castle remained the residence for the bishops of Saare-Lääne Bishopric until the beginning of the Livonian War.  Many cannon towers and higher walls were built during this time. In the middle of the sixteenth century the Kuressaare Castle was sold to the Danes who further modernized the defense system of the Kuressaare Castle. On the ground of Brömsebro peace treaty in 1645, Sweden took possession of Saaremaa and the Swedish improved the fortification system of the Kuressaare Castle. On September 15, 1710 the Swedish Army surrendered to the Russian army without any resistance. The Russian garrison left in the spring of 1711. However, the Kuressaare Castle remained no more important for Russia especially after the division of Poland when the Russians built Bomarsund castle in the vicinity of Stockholm. Finally, the Kuressaare Castle was purchased by the Knighthood of Saaremaa and the building was renovated.

However, the proper rehabilitation of the Kuressaare Castle was initiated in 1968 which lasted for almost one decade. The fortification walls, classical floors, windowpanes, cannon towers and the defense gallery were restored in their medieval patterns. Lots of renovation activities were also started in order to give the Kuressaare Castle of Estonia a pure look of a Middle Ages construction.

Uppsala Cathedral of Sweden

The tallest ancient monument of Scandinavia is Uppsala Cathedral which is situated in the center of the ancient Swedish city, Uppsala.  Uppsala Cathedral was not completely constructed and its construction was continued with regular intervals. Originally Uppsala Cathedral was built in medieval style but later it was modified in different patterns by different rulers. Baroque towers were replaced with tall French spires. The outer brick walls were amended numerous times on various occasions. The interior ceiling and walls of the cathedral were decorated in neo-Gothic style.

Upsala Cathedral of Sweden

Historically, Uppsala Cathedral of Sweden has been used in different ways. Like in Middle Ages, it was not used as a regular worship place but it was reserved for official services. Similarly Uppsala Cathedral has also remained as the coronation church for many of Swedish Monarchs and it was the site of celebrating coronations from the Middle Ages until the end of the 17th century. Since the Protestant Reformation, Uppsala Cathedral is administered by the Lutheran Church of Sweden and it is also the seat of the Archbishop of Uppsala, the primate of Sweden.

Axel Petersson Doderhultarn, Swedish Wood Carving Artist

The wood has remained a potent source of comfort, fuel, tools, transportation and many other usages throughout the history of humans. In fact, the mankind has always kept a dependence on wood as the most common substance for his many activities. But here are some who used wood as a medium of expressing their instinct of love, art and creativity. Axel Petersson Döderhultarn is one of them, the most famous Swedish wood carving artist.  Axel Petersson Döderhultarn was born on December 12 , 1868 in the parish of Döderhult, Sweden.

Since his childhood Döderhultarn had interest in whittling, and carving of wood figures. Apart from continuous discouragement from his family, his passion was never ended. His family forced him to immigrate to USA and to find some better source of earnings but he never gave up and continued his art work.  Till then nobody knew that Döderhultarn will become one day the best artist in Scandinavian flat-plane style of woodcarving.

In the early years of his wood carving career, Döderhultarn worked on figure carving and used to sell his figurines in the local market of Oskarshamn. These traditional wood carving figures were sold very cheap. After a while Döderhultarn started to work in a minimalist style, which ultimately became the reason of his world fame. In 1909,  Döderhultarn  got an opportunity to exhibit his art in an exhibition in Stockholm, where he got enormous response from the Swedish people. After that the Swedish museums began to purchase his creations and slowly his work was exhibited to whole of Europe and the United States.

Döderhultarn became a source of great inspiration to many other wood carving artists not only in Sweden but throughout the world. He is no doubt the best name in wood carving art of Sweden and nowadays Döderhultarn figure is generic term used for the carving of  small wood figures in the minimalist style.
