The Reed Flute Cave of China

One could never imagine that our mother earth right beneath her surface keeps a land truly inhabited by nature without any human intervention. There are underground silent lakes, twinkling and glowing landscapes and mysterious but glorious networks of caves.

The Reed Flute Cave in Guilin, Guangxi, China is a 180 million years old natural sedimentary cave which glows in variety of colors and it is over 240 meters in length. With very close exit and entry spots the course of the cave is U-shaped and it is grabbing the people’s attention for over 1200 years. It was named as Reed Flute Cave due to the type of reed growing outside, by which harmonious and melodic flutes are being carved since centuries. Even today the locals make the flutes from the reed and sell to visitors.

The most prominent feature of the Reed Flute Cave are the stalactites, stalagmites, and columns existing inside the cave which were created by the dripping water in thousands of years. Scientifically these formations can be understood that each drop of water falling on the rocks is containing a very small amount of calcium carbonate and after striking the floor of the cave it also leaves a small calcium carbonate deposit and ultimately it creates a stalagmite. Some of them with continuous process altogether shape a column. Some amazing formations seem like the forest of crystal trees, some resemble like underground mountain ranges. Even some of them have grown like mythological creatures and some have very gullible and friendly appearances.

The Red Flute Cave has also 70 ancient stone inscriptions inside which have been engraved in forms of the travelogues and poetry by Tang Dynasty pedagogues, perhaps as the marks of their contemplations and meditations. A park is also built for the cave comprising of zigzag path, magnificent pavilions, ponds, bridges, plants and other garden structures.
