Quetzals are just fantastic

Trogonidae family of birds has a wonderful member which is popular for its exquisite colors. They are also unique for the green tail which can be of one meter in length. They are the fantastic quetzals.

Pavonine Quetzal

Most of the species of the striking quetzals are found in the humid regions of Latin and Northern America. The ancient Central American tribes had a spiritual association with this magnificent bird and they symbolized it with the snake god “Quetzalcoatl”.

Resplendent Quetzal

Quetzal literally means “large and beautiful tail feather” and one of its long tailed specie is also the national animal of Guatemala. The quetzals live in the tree holes and their diet includes insects, larvae, some small amphibians, berries, and avocados.

Golden headed Quetzal

During the incubation in the breading season the pair participate both together one by one.  Some of the famous species of quetzals include Crested Quetzal ( Pharomachrus antisianus ), Golden-headed Quetzal ( Pharomachrus auriceps) , White-tipped Quetzal ( Pharomachrus fulgidus ) , Resplendent Quetzal ( Pharomachrus mocinno ) and Pavonine Quetzal ( Pharomachrus pavoninus ).

Although quetzals possess spectacular plumage yet they have a threat from the predators like hawks, eagles and owls. In many Central American countries quetzals have been featured on stamps and creative arts.
