7 Famous Natural Wonders of the United Kingdom

England, Scotland, Wales and the Northern Ireland and many other smaller islands lie between the North Atlantic and the North Sea and thus comprise the territory of the United Kingdom. With a total area of approximately 243,610 square kilometers (94,060 sq mi), the geology of the United Kingdom ( UK ) is very diverse and complex. The Kingdom has many mountains, hills, rivers, lakes, waterfalls and a long coastline. Similarly in the past, the United Kingdom had vast forest lands, much of that are deforested with the passage of time. There are many other tremendous rocks, cliffs, caves, fossils and islands that exist in the United Kingdom.

We are here drawing your attention to the 7 famous natural wonders of the United Kingdom;

1- The Needles : The Needles is a row of three distinctive stacks of chalk that rise out of the sea off the western extremity of the Isle of Wright, England, close to Alum Bay. The Needles lighthouse stands at the end of the formation. Built in 1859, it has been automated since 1994.

2- The White Cliffs of Dover : The White Cliffs of Dover are cliffs which form part of the English Coastline facing the Strait of Dover and France. The cliffs are part of the North Downs formation. The cliffs have great symbolic value in Britain because they face towards Continental Europe across the narrowest part of the English Channel.

3- High Force Waterfall: The High Force Waterfall is the natural wonder of located in the Durham county of the United Kingdom. This waterfall is considered as a phenomenal natural wonder of the Kingdom.

4- Scafell Pike : This natural wonder of the United Kingdom is the highest mountain in England at 978 metres (3,209 ft). It is located in Lake District National Park, in Cumbria. Scafell Pike consists of igneous rock dating from the Ordovician geologically part of the Borrowdale Volcanics.

5- Loch Lomond :  Loch Lomond is the natural wonder of the United Kingdom which is a freshwater Scottish loch, lying on the Highland Boundary Fall. It is the largest loch / lake in Great Britain by surface area. The loch contains many islands, including Inchmurrin, the largest fresh-water island in the British Isles, although the loch itself is smaller than many Irish loughs.

6- Cheddar Gorge : This natural wonder of the United Kingdom is a limestone gorge in the Mendip Hills, near the village of Cheddar in Somerset, England. The gorge is the site of the Cheddar show caves, where Britain’s oldest complete human skeleton, Cheddar Man, estimated to be over 9,000 years old, was found in 1903.

7- Fingal’s Cave: This natural wonder of the United Kingdom is a sea cave on the uninhabited island of Staffa, in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland, part of a National Nature Reserve owned by the National Trust of Scotland. It is formed entirely from hexagonally jointed basalt columns within a Paleocene lava flow,  similar in structure to the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Island and those of nearby Ulva.

In every era of the human life the significance of building the bridges has remained consistent. The marvelous bridges are mostly arches, beam bridges, cable-stayed bridges, cantilever bridges and suspension bridges. The planning and the designs of bridges may vary depending on the function of the bridge and the nature of the terrain where the bridge is to be constructed. Stari Most is a historic and Ottoman bridge of the 16th century built in the city of Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina. This bridge crosses the river Neretva and connects two parts of the city. The Old Bridge stood for 427 years, until it was destroyed on November 9, 1993 by Bosnian Croat forces during the Croat-Bosniak War.

Khaju Bridge is considered as the most important recognizing emblem of the province of Isfahan in Iran.  This bridge was constructed by the Persian Safavid king, Shah Abbas II around 1650 C.E., on the foundations of an older bridge.

Tower Bridge was built in 1894 in London, England over the River Thames. This bridge is basically a combined bascule and suspension bridge situated near the Tower of London. The bridge is 800 feet (244 m) in length with two towers each 213 feet (65 m) high, built on piers. The Tower Bridge is considered as  the iconic symbol of London.

The Helix Bridge, previously known as the Double Helix Bridge, is a pedestrian bridge linking Marina Centre with Marina South in the Marina Bay area in Singapore. The Helix is fabricated from approximately 650 tonnes of Duplex Stainless Steel and 1000 tonnes of carbon steel used in the temporary structure and also helping the bridge to get the helix shape.

 Vasco Da Gama Bridge of Portugal is a cable-stayed bridge flanked by viaducts and rangeviews that spans the Tagus River near Lisbon, capital of Portugal. It is the longest bridge in Europe with a total length of 17.2 km (10.7 mi), including 0.829 km (0.5 mi) for the main bridge, 11.5 km (7.1 mi) in viaducts, and 4.8 km (3.0 mi) in dedicated access roads.

Let’s explore the nature with its amazing exhibitions. Some photographers captured the rocks that had turned green due to existence of algae on their spots. May be the surface of these green rocks is fluffy or a bit hairy but they are fertile for the nature lover’s eyes. Natural Rock formations are the result of hundreds of thousands of years of weathering and erosion. These rock structures are truly an amazing gift of nature and they are found in many parts of the world. Sedimentary rocks ,Metamorphic rocks or Igneous rocks, these formation may be any of these three types. Although, they might be named differently by the geologists for their recognition.

Some rock formations are so unique for their amazing structures and some of them are matchless for their positioning. Even some rock formations glow due to their astonishing colors. Lovely Castles of the Lovely Planet

Since the beginning of the human life on the lovely planet, the man has raised numerous synthetic improvisations in different patterns. Architecure and engineering both have attained the key importance in every era and this has resulted the construction of many radical and state of the art buildings. The designs of the architecture and the styles of the elevations have gone through tremendous developments and modifications with the passage of time. However, the sense of the conservation of the common heritage has also been equally developed, because the architecture of different ages is the main source of understanding the life styles, customs and cultures of their respective nations.

In the middle ages, in different parts of the world, especially in Europe the royal class started the tradition to raise a fortified construction in order to protect their personal properties. These type of constructions are usually called as castle and  timber, clay and stones were the basic raw materials used in their constructions.
