Have you ever seen The little dragon? We are talking about the Axolotl which is very close to the Tiger Salamander . Axolotls are incredible creatures that are known by various names. Some call it “walking fish” , some name it “water dog ” while some say them “mudpuppy”. But Axolotls are entirely different species , very unique and exotic. They are found in different colors, normally in two naturally occurring colors and two mutants. Basically Axolotl is a neotenic salamander and in Biology it is known as Ambystoma mexicanum.
Axolotls are the native of the fresh waters of Lake Xochimilco and Lake Chalco in Mexico. The fact which differs Axolotls from salamanders is that they don’t grow up through metamorphosis. Although in larval form they do have the external gills and a caudal fin. They are normally observed with a body length between 15-45 cm. Axolotls become sexually mature at the age of 20-24 months. Axolotls also possess impressive capability of regeneration. In case of a body cut they can heal up their wound amazingly. If their living conditions are appropriate then Axolotls may survive for 10-15 years.
Axolotl, the little dragon is so fascinating and this specie has gone through numerous laboratory researches on account of its astonishing features. They are also kept as pets normally in 10-15 gallon filtered aquariums. The pH of the water of the aquarium should be 6.5-7.5. The Axolotls are presently endangered specially due to the improper draining of their habitat lakes. Their population is under great threat because of the pollution in water where they reside. In their natural habitat the introduction of nonnative fish like African Tilapia has also made the lives of Axolotls in danger as they eat their eggs as food.
